A Deliveroo alternative: take orders commission-free

Deliveroo can take roughly 25–30% of every order. DineKit is a free, self-hosted WordPress plugin used by restaurants worldwide, with commission-free ordering built in — eat-in, takeaway and delivery — so the orders you already win stay 100% yours.

How Deliveroo’s commission works

Deliveroo is a marketplace. It puts your restaurant in front of hungry customers and sends its own drivers to deliver — and it charges a commission on every order for doing so.

Deliveroo typically charges restaurants around 25–30% commission on each order. Uber Eats is broadly similar at roughly 20–30%. Just Eat sits lower for context, at about 14% plus a small per-order fee. Figures vary by market, but the model is the same everywhere.

That percentage adds up quickly. Because it’s taken from every single order, the more you sell through the app, the more you hand over.

The maths hurts. On £6,000 a month of delivery orders (or the equivalent in your currency), a 25–30% commission is roughly £1,500–£1,800 lost every month — before you’ve paid for food, staff or rent. Over a year that’s the price of a small refit, gone.

How DineKit helps you take orders commission-free

The idea is simple: for the orders you already win — regulars, walk-ins, word of mouth — there’s no reason to pay a marketplace cut.

DineKit is live now, free, and used by restaurants around the world. Alongside the menu builder, QR menus, allergen matrix and opening hours, you get:

  • Commission-free online ordering — eat-in (QR order-at-table), takeaway, and delivery, with your own delivery zones and fees
  • On-site card payments through your own Stripe account, with Apple Pay and Google Pay support
  • An installable staff app (PWA) that keeps loading offline, with many tablets kept live in sync automatically
  • A built-in Kitchen Display and per-round tickets, so orders flow straight to the kitchen
  • Partial refunds — refund a whole order or just specific items, taken back through Stripe
  • Built-in support inside the dashboard — no account or licence needed
  • You keep 100% of every order — only standard Stripe card processing fees apply, no 25–30% cut to a middleman

One thing still to come: for delivery orders, live GPS driver tracking and a customer “track your order” link are next on the roadmap. Today, delivery is non-tracked — the venue arranges its own drivers or collection.

When Deliveroo still makes sense

DineKit isn’t trying to pretend Deliveroo has no value. For some things, the apps genuinely earn their fee.

  • Discovery. Deliveroo puts you in front of new, hungry customers who’ve never heard of you. DineKit runs on your own site, so people have to already know where to find you — it’s own-channel by design, not a discovery marketplace.
  • Delivery drivers and live tracking. Deliveroo provides its own fleet of couriers with live GPS tracking and dispatch. DineKit’s delivery ordering handles the order, zones and payment — but it doesn’t supply drivers or track them; you arrange your own or offer collection. If you have no delivery capacity of your own, the app’s fleet is doing real work for that commission.

The honest recommendation? Use both. Let the apps do discovery and delivery for customers you couldn’t reach otherwise — then steer your regulars and repeat orders to your own site, where you keep the lot. That balance is how many restaurants quietly cut their commission bill without losing reach.

Common questions

Can I take online orders through DineKit today?
Yes. Commission-free online ordering — eat-in QR order-at-table, takeaway and delivery — is live now, free, on your own WordPress site, with payments taken through your own Stripe account. It works worldwide with menus localised for around 43 countries, and you keep 100%, paying only standard card processing fees.
Does DineKit provide delivery drivers, live tracking, or bring me new customers?
No, and this is the honest difference. Deliveroo runs a discovery marketplace plus its own delivery fleet with live GPS tracking; DineKit does none of those. DineKit handles the order, zones and payment for delivery, but delivery is non-tracked today and the venue arranges its own drivers or collection — it’s built for the orders you already win, kept commission-free on your own site. Live driver tracking is the biggest item on our roadmap.
What can’t DineKit do yet compared with Deliveroo?
We’d rather be upfront. There’s no live GPS driver tracking or dispatch yet (delivery is non-tracked), and no third-party demand aggregation (DineKit is own-channel by design). Diners can now order ahead for later in the week (future-day pre-orders, per-day kitchen capacity), and “order ready” texts send through your own Twilio account (beta). The remaining trade-offs are the point: because DineKit runs on your own site and takes nothing per order, you keep the full value of every order you win.
Should I quit Deliveroo entirely?
Not necessarily. For most restaurants the smart move is a mix: use the apps for discovery and delivery where they genuinely help, and use your own DineKit-powered site for loyal, repeat customers so you’re not paying 25–30% on orders you’d have got anyway.
